    1 large onion cut in quarters

    Fish sauce to taste

    1/2 medium onion small diced

    4-5 cloves garlic minced

    1Tbs minced ginger

    3-4 bay leaves

    2-3 whole star anise

    1/2 tsp five spice

    2C beef broth

    1/4C soy sauce

    1Tbs cornstarch mixed with 1/4C water
